Why you shouldn’t wait until everything is “perfect” to book a session

I’ve been a boudoir photographer for a really long time.

Do you know how many people DM me or email me daily over the years saying “I love your work! I can’t wait to book a shoot when I do x,y,z”? a lot.

“X,y,z” primarily being: Lose weight

Do you know how many of those people who have these high expectations and excuses for not booking, actually end up booking? Probably 1 or 2 out of 10- not a high amount.

It’s okay to want to feel like your best self for a photoshoot with me. However what’s often missing is that people who lean on weight loss or changing their body in order to feel worthy of booking a shoot, never book, because their goals are not rooted in changing the way they feel about themselves or see themselves. Those kind of goals are rooted in superficiality and we’ve all been there. We think changing x,y,z about ourselves will magically make us love ourselves. And we know that’s not necessarily true.

So— if you find yourself putting yourself in the “I want to do x,y,z before booking a shoot” and if any of your x,y,z’s have to do with weight loss or changing your appearance— I have a challenge for you.

What if it looked more like:
“I want to speak more kindly to myself and learn to like who I see in the mirror first.” Or “I want to unpack the negative feelings I have about myself and understand where they are coming from so I can begin to unlearn them.”

If we’re not actively trying to understand WHY we feel we need to fit into a tiny perfect box in order to be photographed, it’s probably not going to matter how much you change about yourself.

And lastly, I wish we could all stop pausing life and enjoying experiences because we feel we need to fit into someone else’s idea of worthiness. Live your life. Take up space. Take each day for what it is. Make the most of the here and now.

There’s a difference between wanting to make sure you’re mentally and emotionally ready to book a session and telling yourself you have to change who you are in order to enjoy this experience. 🤍
